Where the cost actually lands
Hex prices per editor: $36-$75/seat/month for people who build in the notebook, with the free Community tier giving non-editors a trial of the agent. That's a data-team tool priced for data teams. A business user who wants to ask a question still routes through Slack, a published Thread, or an app someone built — the license itself doesn't hand a marketing or ops lead a seat to work in directly the way an analyst gets one.
What is actually different
Hex's SQL and Python editor is genuinely strong: a schema browser, typeahead, Jinja and dbt support, and AI-assisted code fixes over both SQL and Python cells — full credit there. Hex Magic and Threads have gotten more capable too: Threads can query multiple connected data sources inside one conversation, and Agent Tasks can run on a schedule and send a "root cause analysis and action items" to Slack or email when it catches a metric moving. Hex also ships an MCP server so Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, Codex, and Glean can query a Hex workspace, and — as of a May 2026 beta — the Hex Agent can act as an MCP client itself, pulling in Notion and Linear.
What's still missing is breadth working as one system. Generative apps and dashboards from a single prompt exist, but only in beta — the default path is still an analyst building in a notebook and publishing. Agent Tasks deliver to Slack or email as CSV or a PNG/PDF screenshot; there's no PowerPoint export, and no way to chain detect, analyze, export, and route into one automation the way a workflow builder would. Alerts are threshold- and condition-based rather than a dedicated statistical anomaly detector. Chat presence is Slack natively, plus MCP access from a handful of AI IDEs and assistants — there's no Microsoft Teams surface for the agent itself (Teams only shows up as an enterprise support channel on the pricing page). And connectors number "30+" beyond the four named — solid for warehouses and databases, narrower than a connector catalogue built to reach every SaaS tool a non-technical team already uses.
