# Trucking Analytics: Revenue per Mile, Deadhead, Detention

> Ask your TMS about revenue per mile by lane, empty miles, on-time delivery by customer and unbilled detention, then get the lane scorecard every Monday.

**Know which lanes pay before you take the next load.** Connect your TMS database and ask about revenue per mile, empty miles, on-time delivery and detention in plain English. Then put the Monday lane scorecard and the unbilled-detention check on a schedule.

For asset-based truckload and LTL carriers and freight brokers, and the dispatch, billing and safety teams behind their loads.

## Every question, by who asks it

### Lanes and margin

- Revenue per mile by lane last month, loaded and total
- Empty miles as a share of total miles by lane, last 30 days
- Lanes that lost money last quarter after fuel and driver pay
- Margin per brokered load by customer this week: who is under 15%?

### Customers and billing

- On-time pickup and delivery by customer last week, against the appointment
- Detention hours last month: billed against unbilled, and why
- Fuel surcharge billed against fuel bought, month by month this year

### Drivers and trucks

- Drivers within 5 hours of the 70-hour limit, from the latest ELD export
- Fuel cost per mile by truck last month, worst first
- Trucks more than 1,000 miles past their preventive maintenance interval

## Keep it running

- **The weekly lane scorecard** (Monday 06:00). Revenue per mile, empty miles and on-time delivery for every lane last week, read from the TMS, summarised and emailed to the owner and the pricing desk before the first call. Automation: Timed Start → Query Your Data → Summarize Insights → Send Email.
- **Unbilled detention watch** (Every 5 minutes). A SQL check finds delivered loads with a stop past its free time and no detention charge, and emails billing before the invoice goes out. Automation: Alerts → Send Email.
- **Each shipper's scorecard** (Every week). A private datasite per customer, with Google or Microsoft sign-in, showing its on-time pickup and delivery and its dwell time by facility.

## The numbers it keeps watch on

| Measure | Definition | Source | In Supaboard |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Revenue per mile | Linehaul revenue ÷ loaded miles, and ÷ total miles including empty ones | Common practice | Weekly lane scorecard |
| Deadhead % | Miles that earn no revenue ÷ total miles | ATRI, Operational Costs of Trucking | Weekly lane scorecard |
| Operating cost per mile | Fuel, truck and trailer payments, repair and maintenance, insurance, permits, tyres, tolls, and driver wages and benefits, ÷ miles | ATRI, Operational Costs of Trucking | Ask it monthly, by lane |
| Dwell time per stop | Time at the shipper or receiver, loading or unloading plus detention | ATRI, Operational Costs of Trucking | Each customer's datasite |
| Detention hours | Hours at a stop past the free time in the customer's contract, billed or not | Your contract | Unbilled-detention alert |
| On-time pickup and delivery | Stops arrived by the appointment time ÷ stops | Your SLA | Each customer's datasite |
| Broker gross margin | (Customer rate − carrier pay) ÷ customer rate, per load | Common practice | Weekly report, per customer |
| Driver hours | 11 hours driving after 10 off, no driving after the 14th hour on duty, a 30-minute break after 8 hours driving, 60 or 70 hours in 7 or 8 days | FMCSA, 49 CFR 395.3 | Weekly report, once the logs are in your database |

## Where your data lives

- [SQL Server](https://supaboard.ai/integrations/ms-sql-server): connects live
- [Postgres](https://supaboard.ai/integrations/postgresql): connects live
- [MySQL](https://supaboard.ai/integrations/my-sql): connects live
- [Snowflake](https://supaboard.ai/integrations/snowflake): connects live

Or attach an export to a conversation, as CSV or Excel: Fuel-card transactions; ELD hours-of-service exports; Maintenance logs.

The tables these questions read: Loads and stops, with appointment, arrival and departure times; Lanes, customers and linehaul rates; Fuel surcharge and accessorials, detention and layover among them; Driver pay and settlements; Fuel-card transactions, by truck and date; Maintenance records and hours-of-service logs, by truck and driver.

## Teach it your definitions once

Rules are read with every question, so a term means the same thing in Chat, in Slack and in the Monday report.

- Rule: "Revenue per mile counts linehaul only; fuel surcharge and accessorials are reported apart."
- Rule: "Detention starts two hours after arrival at a stop, unless the customer's contract says otherwise."
- Rule: "A stop is on time if the truck arrives no later than the appointment time."

## Security

- **Read-only by construction.** Database and warehouse queries are read-only. We give you the SQL for a read-only user too.
- **Credentials stay in the workspace.** Scoped to the one workspace that connected them, never logged and never sent back to a browser.
- **SOC 2 Type II.** An organisation-wide audit of the platform, covering every plan.

## FAQ

### Does it connect to our ELD?

There's no ELD or telematics connector. Upload an hours-of-service export as CSV or Excel to ask about it in a conversation. To keep the hours check current on a schedule, copy the logs into a database you connect, where they're read alongside your loads and drivers.

### Can it read our TMS directly?

Yes, if your TMS keeps its loads in a database you can give read access to. SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL and Snowflake connect live, and the connection is read-only.

### Can each shipper see its own on-time numbers?

Yes. Publish a private datasite per customer, with Google or Microsoft sign-in, or keep one workspace per customer. Each can also get its scorecard by email every week.

### How does it learn when detention starts for us?

Write it once as a rule, such as "detention starts two hours after arrival". The agent reads its rules with every question, and you can save reviewed SQL as examples.

### Can dispatch ask from Slack?

Yes. Mention Supaboard in a channel or message it directly, and the answer comes back in Slack. Your data stays read-only.
